The Paradox of Plenty: Finding Sitters in CAT Maths

Finding easy questions in Maths may seem like the proverbial "needle-in-a-haystack" scenario, but it is not that difficult. It simply requires persistence, patience, and selection.

i too think i make a lot of mistakes while reading the questions which causes problems. Silly mistakes make you suffer a lot.. I certainly am an example of that..
i wrote the answer as n/2 thinking the difference between the sum but its averages... point to be noted Will never repeat such mistakes again.

Hmmm......I guess this reinforces my point that accuracy is most important.....particularly when you do not have a vast array of problems open to you due to lack of knowledge, or lack of time to prepare, or a combination of both.

A number of the more complicated problems can also be solved using the first principle approach.....you need to have the confidence as well to keep on doing problems that you are sure that you will get.

It also makes sense to leave problems that you have spent even five minutes on rather than attempting them, if you are not sure of the answer. (Though if you can eliminate some options, then it makes sense to guess).....

    Exactly!
CAT puts a premium on accuracy. Speed is required but if you solve just 40 Questions with about 13 in each, with absolute accuracy you will be 99.7%ile plus. But we are in a hurry to solve more and more.

Accuracy is very important in CAT. You can look from my performance in CAT 2008

    My Scores

    Quant 64 ( 16 Correct, 0 incorrect) 99.88%ile

    Logic and DI 44 ( 12 correct, 4 incorrect) 98.43%ile

    Verbal 76 ( 21 Correct, 8 Wrong) 99.49%ile

    Overall 184 ( 49 Correct, 12 Wrong) 99.97%ile

I also believe that the capacity to select questions, and stick with your selections, because you are confident of them is of utmost importance in getting high accuracy levels.

You need to be able decide from the "look" of a question whether it is meant for you or not. It may be from a topic that you are not comfortable with, but then, if it is simple enough, it is worth attempting on its merit.

This year's CAT had much easier Reading Comprehension Questions, compared to the non-RC questions. If you were to go by the trend for the last two years, you would have avoided RC like the plague, and then suffered for it.

So it helps to solve a question on its merits, rather than its looks.
