hey guys, can anyone please tell me which colleges consider the marks of essay?
and how many marks are usually associated with it,e.g. can u cite the essay marks for last year xat?
and how is it calculated in evaluating final marks that to be counted for college admission?
how long we are supposed to write in essay?
any idea guys.plzzzzzzzzzz do tell me quickly..

Basically essay is used to know the logical power and depth of understanding of candidate about his surrounding world. The interviewer can ask questions based on the essay and it is also used to measure how well a candidate can convince his/her point. So one must make sure that he/she refers the key points of the essay before facing the interview.

Essay writing has been integral part for XAT exams since last so many years. This is a totally different aspect which comes across us in comparison to other similar MBA entrance tests. Generally there is 2 hrs. time to complete the XAT paper which consists of sections like English, Quant and Reasoning. After this paper gets completed there is small break for 10 minutes after which second part of essay writing is being conducted. Essay writing in XAT consists of 20 minutes time and there is no word limit as such for the same but generally 350-450 words will suffice provided the content is good and well managed to justify its topic.

There are basically two broad categories of essays which are asked in XAT they are ABSTRACT topics e.g."There is a no right way of doing a wrong thing." and the other type is KNOWLEDGE BASED topics e.g. "India has one of the largest pools of talented manpower, but few innovations and patented products."

In case of abstract topics the logical power and creative thinking of the candidate is tested while in case of knowledge-based topics one requires indepth knowledge about the topics and had to back his argument with reasonable data and quotes. This requires indepth reading on variety of topics and understanding of the subject matter. I would suggest regular reading of business magazines and business dailies for preparing such topics. Also reading magazines like TIME, INDIA TODAY etc. and listening BBC NEWS will benefit a lot to the candidate not only for the essay writing but also for GD-PI preparation.

What a topic! If one is aware about such things as Capitalism and socialism, the various theories surrounding them etc. Then one can write pages but people who are not in the know how of such tings will be doomed for sure.

The essay is generally not considered for selection.

The shortlisting for GD-PI is done entirely on the basis of ur XAT score.
They read the essay during the PI, but in my case one of the profs just glanced over the essay, I am not sure he could have read it in 5 secs, unless he had telescopic vision

But I think my essay was decent, for the space allowed was just one page and time 10 mins or so

XAT question paper 2010 examination is of 140 minutes and consists of 200 objective type questions and an essay of 250-300 words. Those exam objective questions are asked from the sections: English-80 questions, Reasoning and Quantitative Ability-60 questions and General Awareness-60 questions.

In XAT 2010 exam the remaining 20 minutes candidates are supposed to write an essay of 250-300 words on a given topic. All these above sections are allotted a time of 40 minutes each. For every correct answer a candidates gets 1 mark and 1/3 marks is deducted for an incorrect answer.

this is news...and shocking at that...this will make xat a speed based exam just like the snap!...and GK...omg!!...40 mins..this cannot be true...no one needs 40 mins fer gk....btw whats the source fer this info?...

i couldnt find any source for this info...pankaj can u please put the source otherwise its very misleading and i might delete it, so that it doesnt create any misunderstanding
