    Default DI set 12

    DI set 12

    1. Since every passenger paid in multiple of one only and fare charged includes one part in which 2.5 is multiplied with distance covered, each passenger should cover total distance in multiples of 10. But a passenger boarding at sonipat can't meet this criteria.
No passenger boarded bus at sonipat.
    Option 3.

    2. For maximum no. of passengers to travel with total fare collection of Rs. 6195, single passenger should travel all the way from chandigarh to delhi, with remaining passengers boarding bus at panipat (even though each has to shell out Rs. 3 more for toll tax as no passenger can board bus at sonipat- explained in part 1)
So, Fare of one person from chandigarh to delhi = 5+2.5*200+6 = 511
    So, 511+[5+2.5*20+3]x = 6195
    x= 98
    Max. passengers = 98+1 = 99
    Option 1.

3.For condition to be met in this part, passengers only travel from chandigarh to ambala.
    So, [5+2.5*40]y = 6195
    or, y = 59
    Option 2.

Pls help me in getting the concept involved in following CAT 2000 problem:
Question: “Sixteen teams have been invited to participate in the ABC Gold Cup cricket tournament. The tournament was conducted in two stages. In the first stage, the teams are divided into two groups. Each group consists of eight teams, with each team playing every other team in its group exactly once. At the end of first stage, the top four teams from each group advance to the second stage while the rest are eliminated. The second stage comprised several rounds. A round involves one match for each team. The winner of a match in a round advances to the next round, while the loser is eliminated. The team that remains undefeated in the second stage is declared the winner and claims the Gold Cup.

The tournament rules such that each match results in a winner and a loser with no possibility of a tie. In the first stage, a team earns one point for each win and no points for a loss. At the end of the first stage, teams in each group are ranked on the basis of total points to determine the qualifiers advancing to the next stage. Ties are resolved by a series of complex tie-breaking rules so that exactly four teams form each group advanced to the next stage.”

Now questions were asked on:minimum number of wins required for a team to guarantee advance (or possible advance) to next stage, maximum number of matches that a team can win in the first stage without advancing?

For first I got the answer as:4. Since there are 8 teams in a group, there will be in total 28 matches. Thus, 28 wins and 28 loses in all. As mentioned there cant be tie. Since no tie is possible, in a match a team will win and other will loss. Thus, for these 8 teams there score will be : 7,6,5,4,3,2,1 and 0. 0 score for a team who loses all its matches, 1 for who wins against the first one ( having 0 score) and loses rest of the matches and so on. Therefore, a team scoring 4 will be selected in the top four...

    Please correct me.
