Post Daily RC Passage for the date 06-Oct-11

Summary: Researchers at the University of Southern Denmark and the University of Pennysylvania have shown that the amazing ability of echolocation in bat is enabled by a physical trait never seen before in mammals: so called superfast muscles. These muscles are capable of contraction about 100 times faster than typical body muscles and 20 times faster than the fastest human muscles of eye movement. In bat these superfast muscles can power movements up to 190 times second.

Central Idea: Superfast muscles in Bat.

Post Daily RC Passage for the date 06-Oct-11

Summary: The passage starts off introducing "superfast" muscles and it is related to Bats' huntung abilities. Superfast muscles help in contracting the muscles about 100 times faster than usual . They were thought to be present in sound producing organs of rattle snakes and some types of fish. Apparently, superfast muscles aren't as uncommon as they were thought to be. Bats require to constantly keep track of their moving prey. When a bat is about to catch its prey, it increases the echo and this is when the contractions reach upto 190 calls/sec. This is known as "terminal buzz". Scientists attached a bat vocal muscle between a motor and force sensor and measured the twitches when an electric pulse was given. Upon further experimenting, the scientists determined that the maximum call rate is 190calls/sec and that the muscles are what limit this buzz. Genetic studies are being done to determine whether or not similar genes are involved in various important roles.

Central Idea: The passage mainly deals with the study of superfast muscles in bats.

Post Daily RC Passage for the date 06-Oct-11

Summary: Nocturnal animals such as bats have the ability to send out sound waves at a very fast rate and able to locate the exact positions of things around then by recieving the reflection of sound waves. Bats are able to do this with the help of superfast muscle which are cable contraction about 20 times faster than human fastest muscle.Several studies point out that bats make around 190 calls per second to locate its pray.

Central Idea: The passage focus focuses on the discovery and study of superfast muscles in bat.

Post Daily RC Passage for the date 06-Oct-11

Summary: the passage talks about the explanation of the behaviour of bats in the use of echolocation to capture its prey. the activity is possible because of a specialised `superfast muscle` that is upto 100 times more fast than the normal human muscles.research on these muscles require an integration of a no. of fields including myology, bio acoustics, echolocation and bats behavioural world. next is the description of the study conducted by the scientists. this included stimulating the bats vocal muscle electrically and recording the twitches produced. the length of the twitches gave an idea about how fast the muscles worked and the work done by these muscles. they also conducted experiment to determine the theoretical maximum frequency for a buzz, by allowing the bat to hunt insects in a chamber wired with microphones.the results showed that bats have superfast muscle types and can power movements upto 190 times a minute.they further plan of these muscles from a molecular and genetic perspective.

Central Idea: the passage is based on the studies and their findings of Meads and Elemans on the mechanisms involved in the behavioural feature of bats in the use of echolocation to catch its prey, which is basically dependant upon the function of a specialised muscle called `super fast muscle`

Post Daily RC Passage for the date 06-Oct-11

Summary: Researchers are amazed to discover the super-fast muscle in mammals. Superfast muscle is defined as one which can respond a lot quicker than regular muscles. Bats possesses this superfast muscle which helps them to react 100 times faster than regular human muscles and 20 times faster than human eye muscle which is fastest in humans.

Central Idea: study of superfast muscle in bat.
